What is pickleball?

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. It originated in the USA in the 1960s, and today over 50 million people across all continents play the game. It’s a dynamic paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis—and it’s easy to learn, even for those who have never played racket sports before.

The game is played on a court similar in size to a badminton court, with a net slightly lower than a tennis net. Players use paddles and a lightweight plastic ball with holes, which slows down the pace and makes the game more controlled than tennis.
This makes pickleball fun, accessible, and engaging for all ages—from kids to seniors.

Game Rules – In a Nutshell

While pickleball may seem like a new and complex sport, the rules are actually quite simple:

– The game can be played in singles or doubles.
– The serve is made underhand and diagonally into the opposite service box.
– After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleying (hitting without a bounce) is allowed.
– At the net, there is a non-volley zone called the “kitchen” – players may not hit volleys while standing inside this area.
– Only the serving team or player can score points, and games are usually played to 11 points, with at least a 2-point margin to win.
Despite its simple rules, the game is fast-paced and requires good coordination and quick reflexes, especially during rapid exchanges at the net.

What equipment do you need for pickleball?

Pickleball is a sport that doesn’t require complicated or expensive gear. To get started, you’ll need:

Paddles (Rackets)

Pickleball paddles are lightweight and made from modern materials. Unlike tennis rackets, they have no strings and resemble oversized ping-pong paddles. There are many models available on the market—from recreational to professional—with varying weights, balances, and core thicknesses. These features influence how much control or power you get in each shot.

Pickle balls

Pickleballs are made of plastic and have holes (they’re perforated). There are two main types:
Outdoor balls – heavier, with smaller holes, designed to withstand wind and harder surfaces.
Indoor balls – lighter, with larger holes, suited for smooth indoor courts.
They also vary in durability and flight speed, which can significantly affect the pace and feel of the game.

Sports Shoes

The best choice is tennis shoes or pickleball-specific shoes, as they offer excellent grip and lateral stability—crucial for quick direction changes on the court.

Pickleball Court

A pickleball court measures 6.1 meters by 13.4 meters (20 x 44 feet), with a net height of approximately 86 cm (34 inches) at the center.
The court markings and the non-volley zone (commonly called the “kitchen”) are essential elements that define the gameplay.
